Super Speciale
Doing Italian Sunday dinner
Celebrating Italian Heritage Month (October) was extra special. It hasn’t been a month or occasion I mark specifically. Everyday I feel the connection to my heritage. Whether I’m slicing biscotti at the bakery or making a simple Sunday pasta dinner, my Italianness is always front and center.
Growing up in my Italian-American compound with my paternal grandmother and loads of other relatives, I was surrounded by traditions and superstitions. It was definitely a unique way to grow up, and many of their ways rubbed off on me.
It’s always nice when the community recognizes your commitment to your heritage and ultimately to your community. It was a great evening at The Pontelandolfo Club of friends, family , community (and a bit of wedding crashing) this past Columbus day weekend. And I was truly honored to receive this award.
Here’s the speech, in case you missed it…
Thanks so much for this award,
The Ponte Club is much more than amazing eggplant … its about community and family and tradition….and the scholarship fund that you are all supporting tonight.
Growing up in Waterbury surrounded by my grandmothers, great aunts and amazing neighbors was a rich experience loaded with Italian traditions, religious superstitions, abundant gardens, and the fish man on fridays. ( like the ice cream man, but fish)
With these traditions there was always great food and gatherings.
Baking Italian cookies, writing and sharing recipes has been a joy.
-a way to honor my Italian heritage and hopefully connect generations and share our Italian-american experience.
From my parents example, Carmen and Cori… I was taught early on about what commitment to family, friends, business, and ultimately community means. They weren’t able to write big checks to get their picture in the paper ….but they always showed up…. Always checked in… showed up with a cold cut platter when needed… or put the coffee on after the wake. As the dedicated barber he was, my Dad did many house calls and hospital haircuts.
Community isn’t about money  … it’s  simple …. donate food, clothing, an auction item,… check in…like or share posts….  take a walk for hunger, Alzheimers, cancer, whatever  touches you… and bring friends along…
When you engage it’s contagious… causes that are important to you become important to others when they see your passion., that is how community happens.
Thanks again and happy Italian heritage month, and buon auguri to the other recipients!
